17.09.2019 | Iran crisis: Why Putin is 'real winner after Saudi Arabia oil attack'
Source - The Daily Express

The US has claimed it has evidence to prove Iran were the architects of the strikes, although they deny responsibility claiming the Tehran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen are the real culprits. Tension had been brewing in the Middle East following Iran and the US's ongoing feud regarding nuclear activities overseen by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal that was initially agreed when Barack Obama was president, citing what he viewed it as a "violation" of the agreement from Tehran. Rouhani immediately declared his country would "begin our industrial enrichment without any limitations" setting about reviving the nuclear project that had been restricted by the deal.

Putin also moved weapons into Iran helping to strengthen Moscow-Tehran relations.

Since then, heavy sanctions have been placed on Iran by the US in an attempt to pressure Rouhani into submission.

The attacks on Sunday have seen yet more tussling for influence in the region, with Putin and Trump clashing once again on the diplomatic stage.

Putin has offered missiles to Saudi Arabia, having already done the same with the US' NATO ally Turkey.

Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov contradicted Trump's Iran accusations saying he has not "received any new information about the attack that could help it draw any final conclusions about the incident."

However, analyst and strategy expert Dr Alan Mendoza of the Henry Jackson Society told Express.co.uk that, for Putin, the inflation in oil prices after the attacks is also a huge win for Moscow.

He said: "Don’t forget, and this is very important, Putin does very well from an increase in oil prices. Very well indeed."

Dr Mendoza believes this will not just help Putin economically with oil being a major export in Russia, but also as he looks to regain control of opposition to his presidency.

He added: "It helps because it means more money for the Russian State, which means Putin can buy off more of his enemies."

Dr Mendoza continued: "We know the Russians are engaged in quite significant problems domestically, the wheels look like they’re falling off the project.

"An injection of cash will certainly help prolong Putin’s time in office."
