Iraq’s presidency condemned U.S.-Saudi strikes as a violation of its sovereignty while also rejecting the use of Iraqi territory to attack neighboring countries.
Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, an Iran-aligned Iraqi militia, threatened retaliation, saying it would not allow U.S. or Saudi forces to “desecrate Iraqi soil without paying a heavy price.”
The diplomatic rupture comes as President Donald Trump moves to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.
Al-Zaidi recently visited the White House before traveling to Iran, highlighting Baghdad’s difficult balancing act between Washington, Tehran and Gulf states.
