Washington and Tehran traded blows in the Strait of Hormuz overnight, and explosions were heard in the Iranian capital.

Donald Trump said the US was responding to an attack on its warships transiting the strait. The US president dismissed the strikes as “just a love tap” and insisted the ceasefire remained “in effect”.

Iran then launched a series of missile and drone attacks on the UAE in the early hours of Friday, with the Emirati ministry of defence saying its air defences were “actively engaging” with the assault.

Mr Trump said Iran and the US were still engaged in negotiations to end the war, but added: “They have to understand: if it doesn’t get signed, they’re going to have a lot of pain.”
