Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Canada if it goes ahead with its planned trade deal with China.
The US president warned that Canada would be “eaten alive” if Mark Carney, the prime minister, carried through with his plans to trade more closely with Beijing.
Mr Carney is trying to foster a new global trading order by working more closely with China afterTrump upended long-standing trade relationships by imposing sweeping tariffs on goods imported to the US last year.
“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform.
“China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the USA.”
