The EU is reportedly split as opposition to extend the Brexit deadline date grows. According to BuzzFeed News, leaders in Europe are angry at Donald Tusk’s recommendation that the Brexit deadline be extended until January 31.

Among them, Emmanuel Macron, France’s president, was “not happy” with the extension recommendation.

The publication said: “Two diplomatic sources told BuzzFeed News that French President, Emmanuel Macron, was not happy with Tusk’s recommendation to extend until January 31.”

The renewed frustration comes following the news that MPs had voted to reject Boris Johnson’s timetable to push legislation through Parliament in time to take the UK out of the EU by October 31.

Despite the growing likelihood that the UK will not leave the EU by the end of the month, Mr Johnson assured EU leaders that he intended to keep to his strict October 31 departure date.

Members of his party were less enthusiastic, with Commons leader, Jacob Rees-Mogg, admitting to MPs it was “very hard” to see how the necessary laws would be passed in time for the October deadline.

The European Commission was quick to respond to the news that MPs had voted down the timetable.

A Commission spokesman said: "The Commission takes note of tonight's result and expects the UK government to inform us about the next steps."

But Mr Tusk seemed to bypass any formal talks with EU leaders, tweeting he would "recommend the EU27 accept the UK request for an extension" in order to "avoid a no-deal Brexit".

The BBC’s Europe editor, Katya Adler, revealed that: "The temptation amongst most I speak to tonight in EU circles is to grant the 31 Jan extension."

This has prompted many to speculate that the Government’s plan to trigger a general election is likely.

Following yesterday’s commons vote, a Government source told the BBC that Parliament had “blew its last chance”.
