15.03.2019 | ERG splits as hardliners vow to never give up fighting for Brexit
Source - The Daily Express
The most eurosceptic sources in the ERG said they are “not going to fold” and they are prepared to “spend the rest of my life fighting for this”. The source added the Withdrawal Agreement is “Brexit in name only”. Another hardliner urged calmness among the group, telling the Financial Times: “My colleagues should calm down and see where we are at end of the week.
The source added: “The government has collapsed.
“As of now we are still leaving on March 29, the fundamentals are unchanged.”
However others in the ERG are desperately hoping to find a way to back the deal and make sure Brexit happens.
Lucy Allan, MP for Telford, said she could vote differently when the deal is offered to MPs for a third time.
She said: “I have to seriously consider supporting the prime ministers deal although in my view it is a worse option than Remain.
Meanwhile Bournemouth MP Conor Burns said: “I’m actively looking for reasons to support the Withdrawal Agreement.
“That’s why the Attorney General’s advice was so important, critical to many of us.”
This morning, arch-europhile Guy Verhofstadt has told the European Union should not allow a Brexit delay despite MPs emphatically demanding an extension to Article 50 in last night’s Commons drama.
The European Parliament’s Brexit representative has moved to hold Theresa May to the March 29 deadline and is trying to gather EU support for blocking an Article 50 extension unless the Prime Minister can provide concrete proposals on what she would use the extra time for.
