In a trans-Atlantic phone call the young French leader warned the consequences would be severe.
However, Mr Tump clearly ignored Mr Macron’s advice and yesterday made the bombshell announcement.
Adding his voice to near worldwide condemnation Mr Macron said he ‘deplored’ the US president’s unilateral decision to officially recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, saying that the city’s status should be determined as part of a settlement between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
During a news conference in Algiers, Algeria, he said: “It is a regrettable decision that France does not approve of, and that goes against international law and the resolutions of the UN Security Council.
“The status of Jerusalem is a question of international security that concerns the entire international community.
“The status of Jerusalem must be determined by Israelis and Palestinians within the framework of negotiations carried out under the auspices of the United Nations.”
The 39-year-old French centrist said he tried during a phone call earlier this week to convince his US counterpart to reverse his decision, to no avail.
He added: “France and Europe are attached to the two-state solution – Israel and Palestine – living side by side in peace and security and within internationally recognised borders, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states
“For now, I am calling for calm and peace, and for everyone to act responsibly.
“We must avoid an outbreak of violence at all costs and promote dialogue.”
Mr Macron’s efforts to boost France’s image abroad have done nothing to improve his pallid popularity ratings at home.
According to a YouGov poll published on Thursday, just one-third – a tepid 35 per cent – approve of his performance, the poll found.
