16.04.2019 | China, Russia and Iran attack US as Venezuela crisis deepens - ‘They're spreading chaos’
Source - The Daily Express

Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, said “all options are on the table” as the US bids to topple Maduro from his position. Venezuela has long been in crisis, with many citizens critical of Maduro's reign. Under his recent leadership the country has been in turmoil, enduring blackouts, food shortages and power cuts.

Now, China, Russia and Iran have claimed the US is wrong to support Maduro’s socialist rival Juan Guaido, who himself is attempting to out the president and become leader.

According to Newsweek, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang told reporters Mr Pompeo’s “attempts to slander China and sow discord between China and Latin American countries are irresponsible and nonsensical”.

He said: "We are strongly opposed to it.

"The U.S. has long been treating Latin America as its backyard, where it would resort to wilful use of pressure, threat or even subversion. People can tell right from wrong.

“I am sure Latin American countries are fully capable of telling a true friend from a false one who is ignoring rules and spreading chaos."

Lu added: "I need to point out that for quite some time, certain U.S. politicians have been touring the globe with the same script in their pockets to smear China, starting fires and fanning the flames and sowing discords.

“Such behaviours are really beneath their dignity. A lie will remain a lie, even if repeated a thousand times. Mr Pompeo might as well take a break."

Russia also waded into the debate by arguing that the US was “openly meddling in the internal affairs of sovereign countries”.

The country’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said: “Venezuela is on everyone’s lips. Their regime-change blitz has failed.

“But the Americans are not giving up their aim to topple the legitimate president."

Iran claimed that US President Donald Trump was attempting to turn Latin American into “its own backyard, as it was in the 19th century”.

In a bid to secure his position as president, Nicolás Maduro has formed a civilian militia of armed members of the public.

He has recently called for a million more people to join this militia by the end of the year.
