04.12.2020 | Iran: Looking Beyond the Assassination
by Anthony H. Cordesman - CSIS
The Burke Chair at CSIS has released a commentary on the current state of affairs between the United States and Iran.
This commentary analyzes Iran’s progress toward producing a nuclear device by examining the following topics:
The Impact of Advances in Iran’s Missile Forces
Testing Simulated Nuclear Weapons
Producing Fissile Material
New Centrifuges
This commentary also addresses Iran’s broader strategic objectives:
Iran’s Other Military Gains
Iran’s Major Gains in the Region
Failed Progress in the Southern Arab Gulf States
Uncertain U.S. policies
Iran’s Reactions
Important as the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh may be, it is only one part of the story. Like the killing of Qassem Soleimani, it has a major political impact and makes it even harder for the United States to negotiate with Iran. At the same time, both the assassination and Iran’s nuclear program need to be kept in a broader strategic context.
