It was the earthquake moment that suggested that Boris Johnson was on course for an historic victory. Blyth Valley, a Northumberland former mining consituency that has been a Labour stronghold since 1950, unexpectedly turned blue at around 11.30pm signalling the start of an extraordinary realignment of British politics that cost Jeremy Corbyn his leadership of the Labour party and saw Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson ousted.
Just after 3.30am, the Prime Minister, sounding hoarse after six weeks of campaigning, declared that One Nation Conservatism had been given a “powerful new mandate” as swathes of the Midlands and the North turned blue - some traditional Labour seats voting Tory.
