To many, the statement recalled his predecessor’s tedious addresses outside No 10 – the “nothing has changed” indecisiveness that came to define Theresa May’s term in office. The Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to deliver Brexit by Oct 31, yet stopped short of explicitly calling the early general election many pundits had anticipated. “Oh my god he truly has done a Theresa May,” complained Labour backbencher Jess Phillips. The Green Party’s Caroline Lucas dismissed his words as “bluster”. Between the lines, however, the PM’s statement was both a declaration of war against Remainer rebels within his party and a clever piece of positioning that lays the groundwork for calling a general election.
